─ You died in battle. Welcome to Reikai, the spiritual world, specifically to the village of Kuraimura, the last and the first station of Kami Kaido, the endless road of gods. Here is one out of many anthers torture-filled levels, where the spirits of honorable warrios come to begin their trial. Lucky you aren’t in any of the other levels such as climbing a mountain of knives or drowning in a dirty pool of blood, the poor spirits in the other levels can only resign themselves to suffering and, of course, hope their living relatives remember to burn KAMI COINS at their graves. KAMI COINS are just about as useful to the spirit as Earth money, but who knows? Maybe King Emma will take your bribe to return to the world of living or maybe you have enough courage and skills to defeat him in combat and take his place being reborn as a new god (KAMI).

You think back on your life and immediately feel completely overwhelmed. You can suddenly see everything with piercing clarity: the gift of love, the pain of loss, crippling despair, inexplicable beauty. It brings you to your knees. You shut your eyes tightly, a futile attempt to stop the onslaught. The harsh brilliance begins to soften. You relax a little and open your eyes. You see a figure approaching, blurry in the perpetual dusk.

She’s coming for you. Her hard old eyes are fixed on you. She moves slowly, arthritic limbs straining against the weight of her body. She’s holding something. As you gaze into her eyes, the memories of your past life seem far away. Suddenly, she’s right in front of you. In one hand, she holds a steaming pot. In the other, a ladle. You know what you need to do. Already, you no longer consider the past your own.

She dips the ladle and holds it to your lips. As you drink, you slip into oblivion. You are stripped of every memory. Your form melts away and, at last, you are lost. The old woman takes the hand of the blank spirit. She leads it to her bridge, a bridge worthy of Hell: three levels, each extending farther than the eye can see. They go to unknown worlds. The woman observes your spirit behind her. It may have been forgotten, but the woman remembers. She saw everything. Now, she chooses your next life: Wealth? Poverty? Health? Love? She guides your spirit to the bridge and watches it walk into its next world.
